As a student at UCSC, I was paying $780 a month to share a room in the Chestnut St. apartments. We had 4 people living in a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom. Our property management company Essex is one of the single biggest contributors to the California Apartment Association. Our units aren’t covered by rent control due to Costa Hawkins. If we were to renew our lease, our rent would increase by $200-300 a year and month to month renting would be roughly $4700 a month (the new unit price was going to be $3400/month). As a result, I moved out of the area to the Central Valley so I could afford my rent as a recent post-grad.
